We received word today that the sheep herd is fixing to move into the northern common area along the Compton Drainage Ditch in the very near future. Please read the message below from the sheep herder:

"Our intent is to provide a flock to graze the area no later than the evening of 15 July, 2026.

The size of this flock will be determined by the number of sheep that either have lambs at their side that are old enough to safely graze and have received the appropriate course of vaccinations.

We have a significant concern regarding heat stress, heat exhaustion and heat stroke with the flock and lambs due to current temperatures consistently being in excess of 100 degrees.

Their fleece provides a level of cooling, however, their current shorter staple and the young lambs ability to regulate body temperature is a concern, so we ask that residents in the area help keep an eye on the flock for signs of overheating, as this can prove to be fatal very quickly. We also ask that residents DO NOT spray the sheep with water. This causes the wool to absorb the water, creating a layer of matted wool which traps the body heat (102-104°F), essentially causes the sheep to steam to death.

Wildlife interaction has been at an all time high this year due to the ongoing drought. This has caused several of the local bears, mountain lions and other predators to be more aggressive in seeking water and food sources in areas they would normally avoid.

As always, the potential for predation exists, however, as the Wildlife Urban Interface continues to evolve, we expect to have more incidents involving depredation.

If residents should encounter a predator among the flock, or in an active act of depredation, we ask that they immediately notify local law enforcement and notify us so that we can notify CPW and take appropriate action. This may mean that deadloss has to remain in the area until depredation is confirmed by CPW. We will remove the carcass as soon as permitted.

We will be increasing flock sizes as appropriate and as more lambs reach the appropriate age to open graze.
